The atmosphere at the Claretian University of Nigeria, Maryland, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State, buzzed as the institution officially commissioned its newly built Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center—an educational infrastructure project sponsored by Distinguished Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, the Senator representing Imo East (Owerri Zone) in the Nigerian Senate.
The ceremony held at the university campus, attracted an array of dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Her Excellency, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, PHD, and her husband, former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Ike C. Ibe, and some top political office holders in the State. Other dignitaries in attendance were the traditional Ruler of Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area, HRH, Eze Dr. Ekwelibe, Agunna 1of Irete, members of the academia, senior clergy, students, and community stakeholders.
In her address, the Deputy Governor commended Senator Onyewuchi for his vision and for investing in projects that directly impact youth development. She noted that the digital age demands leaders who understand the importance of technology-driven education. She further congratulated the Vice Chancellor and management of CUN on their just-concluded maiden Convocation ceremony, noting that the State Government will support the institution as she would inform His Excellency, the Governor about the giant strides of the University.
Speaking at the event, Senator Onyewuchi described the project as part of his ongoing commitment to educational development, youth empowerment, and digital literacy in Imo State. He emphasized that access to modern technological training is no longer optional for young Nigerians but a critical foundation for competitiveness in the global economy.
He urged the students to dream big and work hard to actualize their future goals and ambitions, noting that with the right tools, skills, and determination, they can compete with the best minds anywhere in the world. Therefore, the new ICT Center is a platform for them to explore their creativity, sharpen their digital skills, and prepare themselves for the future. The Senator promised to do more for the University.
The state-of-the-art ICT Center is equipped with modern computer systems, high-speed internet connectivity, multimedia facilities, and learning software designed to enhance teaching, research, and technological innovation within the university community.
The Vice-Chancellor of Claretian University, on behalf of the management team, expressed profound gratitude to Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, describing the facility as a landmark addition to the institution’s growing academic resources. He further noted that the Senator has been a wonderful friend and supporter of the University, through whose generosity CUN now has solar light.
Students who interacted with newsmen at the event, expressed excitement and hope that the new center would enhance their learning experience and open doors to opportunities especially, in the areas of data analysis, digital communications software development, and online entrepreneurship, amongst others.
Highlights of the event were the official ribbon-cutting performed by the Deputy Governor, as well as guided tours round the ICT facility, led by VC.
