Mon 08,Sep 2025 DOI: null | PDF | Author: Lawrence Boakye | Views: 134

Abstract

Recent research shows that some of the major solutions needed to promote human development in Africa are connected to the potentials of our indigenous knowledge.1 This paper looks deeper into the subject by examining the relevance of indigenous knowledge, how to harness it, and encourage its inclusiveness for development. The discourse tends to affirm the sense of pride of a people and how they can contribute through participation in their own narrative towards social change.

The researcher examines indigenous knowledge and its sources, and highlights the peculiarities and uniqueness of these sources and their cultural distinctions. The work also brings to the fore how indigenes in the continent of Africa can claim the right to participate directly in their developmental processes and policymaking which are contextualized and driven by their own epistemological values. The researcher studies, for example, a contemporary Ghanaian/Akan knowledge practices and creativity and their cultural heritage relating to their textile design and herbal medicine, the process of manufacturing and production.

This observation or inquiry is meant to justify the strength and relevance of indigenous knowledge for development, as well as the various challenges that come with the promotion of indigenous knowledge.

Keywords are: Development, Indigenous knowledge, Sustainability, Creativity, and Empowerment
