Trans-National Education (TNE) refers to higher education activities that cross national borders, involving the movement of students, teachers, programmes, institutions, knowledge, or educational services. It includes partnerships, exchange programmes, development projects, and commercial initiatives.
TNE can be delivered through face-to-face learning abroad or distance education using technologies such as e-learning. It aims to expand access to higher education, strengthen international cooperation, promote the knowledge economy, and build global research and teaching networks.
Nigeria has been a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) since 1 January 1995 and is a party to the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), which promotes trade liberalisation and recognises education as an exportable service. Through the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria seeks to use these provisions to expand access to higher education and encourage collaboration between Nigerian universities and international institutions.
